Evolution of Chemical Peels
for the Face and Neck

Chemical face peeling has been a popular treatment for skin rejuvenation for many years. In our office, new technologies for skin rejuvenation such as FRAXEL™ Laser treatments have almost completely replaced chemical peeling because the outcomes are far superior and have few downsides.

FRAXEL™ Laser

One technology we use is the new FRAXELTM Laser system, an FDA-approved method that can repair aging and sun-damaged skin in just four sessions. The treatments improve the skin’s tone, texture, and pore size, while also erasing unwanted brown spots and removing fine lines and creases — even in very delicate areas such as around the eyes, or on the neck, chest and hands. The improvement of the skin with the FraxelTM laser is predictable, with a high margin of safety.

Key Points:

  • Treats sun spots, lines, creases, melasma, freckling, acne and surgical scars, and sun damage
  • Does not over-lighten or create hypopigmentation
  • Improves skin progressively over four treatment sessions, and maintains well
  • Improves skin texture and pore structure, rejuvenating deeper skin layers
  • Safe for all skin types
  • Causes some swelling and flaking, usually for 1–3 days

Chemical Peels

Mild chemical peels such as enzyme and pumpkin peels are extremely popular, but they have limited benefits as standalone treatments. They are most effective when used on a regular basis and in combination with a good skin-care program.

Key Points:

  • Treats superficial lines and mild pigment spots
  • Must be repeated for maintenance
  • Causes limited flaking and peeling for 5–10 days
  • Higher risk of problems, compared to other treatment options.

Microdermabrasion

Microdermabrasion removes the top layer of dead skin cells. This enables better penetration by skin-care products and thoroughly cleanses the skin and pores. Though it is an important adjunct to regular skin care, microdermabrasion doesn’t reduce acne scarring or stimulate significant repair of sun damage.
